At what age can I withdraw my TSP without penalty?

Age-based in-service withdrawals are withdrawals that you can make from your TSP account when you’re age 59½ or older. We determine your age based on the date of birth reported by your employing agency or service. If that date is incorrect, you must ask your agency or service to change it.

Do I have to report TSP withdrawal on taxes?

Your payment will be taxed when you withdraw it from the tradi- tional IRA or the eligible employer plan. The TSP is required to withhold 20% of your payment for federal income taxes. This means that in order to roll over your entire payment, you must use other funds to make up for the 20% withheld.

When do I have to put more money into my TSP?

If you aren’t putting at least 5% of your income into your TSP, to maximize the matching contributions from your agency, you’re turning down free money. You may already be at 5% and not know it. On Oct. 1, 2020, the automatic enrollment percentage for TSPs increased from 3% to 5% of basic pay.

Can you roll over a Roth 401k into a TSP?

The TSP will accept into the Roth balance of your TSP transfers from Roth 401(k)s, Roth 403(b)s and Roth 457(b)s—but you can’t indirectly rollover Roth funds into your TSP, and can’t move money from a Roth IRA into your TSP account. If you don’t already have a Roth balance in your existing TSP account, the transfer will create one.

When to take penalty free withdrawals from TSP?

Age matters. If you leave your job between age 55 and 59½, you may be able to take penalty-free withdrawals from the TSP. In contrast, penalty-free withdrawals generally are not allowed from an IRA until age 59 ½.
