Identity theft and tax fraud are two of the most concerning reasons for a rejected tax return. If someone uses your SSN to fraudulently file a tax return and claim a refund, your tax return could get rejected because your SSN was already used to file a return.

Can you get a tax refund with ITIN?

The Individual Tax Identification Number, or ITIN, allows taxpayers who don’t have a Social Security Number (SSN) to file income tax returns. Having an ITIN number won’t make you eligible for benefits, such as Social Security or earned income credits that provide refunds to some low-income filers.

Do you need an ITIN to file a tax return?

ITIN is for tax purposes only. It does not authorize work and cannot be used as an identification number or for any purpose outside the tax system. Who needs ITIN? If you must file a U.S. tax return or you are listed on a tax return as a spouse or a dependent and you are not eligible to obtain a valid SSN, you must apply for an ITIN number.

When does the Itin for tax year 2016 expire?

A2: Any ITIN that does not have a middle digit of 83, 84, 85, 86 or 87 and was used on a tax return for Tax Year 2016, Tax Year 2017 or Tax Year 2018 will not expire in 2019.

When does the IRS notify you of ITIN status?

You should allow 7 weeks from the mailing date of the Form W-7, for the IRS to notify you of your ITIN application status (9 to 11 weeks if you submit the application during peak processing periods (January 15 through April 30) or if you’re filing from overseas).

Do you have to have a SSN and an ITIN number?

If you must file a U.S. tax return or you are listed on a tax return as a spouse or a dependent and you are not eligible to obtain a valid SSN, you must apply for an ITIN number. By law, a person cannot have both an SSN and an ITIN number. When completing tax return forms, you should enter the ITIN in the space for SSN.
