Why did IRS send me a certified letter?

You were audited and the IRS mailed you a certified letter which is known as a notice of deficiency. The reason this IRS notice is certified is because the IRS must wait 90 days from the date of its mailing (150 days if you reside outside the U.S.) to assess the additional tax the IRS says you should owe.

Is a certified letter from the IRS bad?

Certified letters are generally a last resort for the IRS. That means that, once someone starts receiving IRS certified mail, the IRS will be expecting a response within a reasonable amount of time. Failure to respond could result in serious consequences.

What happens when you get a certified letter from the IRS?

Generally speaking, the IRS sent you certified mail to show it attempted to give you notice of whatever issue the IRS wants to address with you. If the IRS fails to give you notice and an opportunity for a hearing then in certain cases the IRS brings up Constitutional issues regarding your right to Due Process.

Do IRS checks come certified mail?

Some IRS notices are sent via certified mail, such as the Notice of Intent to Levy, while others are mailed via regular post, like changes made to your tax return. Read all IRS letters and notices you receive, both certified and via regular mail. Do not ignore any of them.

What kind of letter does the IRS send?

What does a reminder letter from the IRS mean?

IRS Letter that is a Second Reminder Notice that includes spousal notification. This letter from the IRS notifies the spouse of a taxpayer that the tax return is overdue or there is a tax amount owed. It is commonly referred to as the “Spousal Letter.”
