The PTIN regulations require all tax return preparers who are compensated for preparing, or assisting in the preparation of, all or substantially all of a tax return or claim for refund of tax to register and obtain a PTIN.

How do I get a copy of the PTIN list?

Data is updated twice annually, on March 1 and September 1. Click once on the jurisdiction for which you wish to download PTIN data. A zip file will begin downloading. Once the download is complete, open the folder containing the zip file. Once you open the folder, you will see an Excel document entitled, “FOIA_ [Jurisdiction]_extract.”
