If you’re an assured tenant or protected tenant you need to give notice in writing. You’ll need to give at least 28 days notice but this might be longer – look at what it says in your tenancy agreement. If you have a joint agreement, only one tenant needs to give notice. This will end the tenancy for both people.
Can a tenant break a lease in Alberta?
A landlord cannot break a tenant’s lease and make a tenant leave the property before the end of the lease. A landlord can ask the tenant to agree to end the lease early, but the tenant is not required to do so. Any agreement made should be in writing and signed by both the tenant and landlord.
How can I get out of my rental agreement early?
You can only end your fixed term tenancy early if your agreement says you can or by getting your landlord to agree to end your tenancy. If your agreement says you can end your fixed term tenancy early, this means you have a ‘break clause’. Your tenancy agreement will tell you when the break clause can apply.
