What is theoretical efficiency?

The maximum theoretical efficiency of a heat engine (which no engine ever attains) is equal to the temperature difference between the hot and cold ends divided by the temperature at the hot end, each expressed in absolute temperature (Kelvin).

What is real efficiency?

Real efficiency for any system is always output divided by input. If the units of input and output are the same you get a percentage but if not you likely have something useful for relative comparisons only or you may have a meaningless figure suitable only for a quarterly stockholders report or infographic on CNN.

How is thermal efficiency measured?
