What happens if you make a mistake on self assessment?

If you’ve made a mistake on your Self Assessment tax return, you can make an amendment or correction. You must do this by the year after the filing deadline for the tax year you’re amending.
What if HMRC makes an error?
You can ask HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to cancel tax you owe (‘arrears’) if you think they have made a mistake because they did not act on information they had. You can do this by asking for an ‘extra-statutory concession’ (‘ESC A19’) if you owe: Income Tax, for example because you were on the wrong tax code.
How do I know if my tax codes wrong?
If you think your tax code might be wrong, you can use the online check your Income Tax service to tell HMRC about a change in your circumstances. If you cannot use the online service you can contact HMRC .
How do I know if I owe HMRC money?
Check your payment has been received View your HM Revenue and Customs online account to check if your payment’s been received – it should show as paid between 3 to 6 working days later. If paying by post, you can include a letter with your payment to ask for a receipt from HMRC.
Any mistakes can be picked up by HM Revenue & Customs and this could mean that you have extra tax to pay and might receive a penalty notice. But if you made a genuine mistake despite taking reasonable care, no penalty is due and you can appeal against a penalty notice.
Are HMRC ever wrong?
Mistakes, errors, and slips in your payroll reporting can, and likely will, be scrutinised by the watchful HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in the UK. Penalties, though unwelcome, are often reversable with appeals and reasonable care in strong measure. The HMRC can, and does, make its share of blunders.
When to tell HMRC and pay back self employment income support?

HMRC is also encouraging self-employed people that were eligible to have claimed up to £7,500 in the first tranche of funds from the Treasury’s Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS), but subsequently did not need it, to return the cash.

The service is now closed for the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme. You can no longer make a claim for the second grant. This scheme is being extended.
