What happens if someone uses your tax file number?

Compromised tax file numbers Your TFN and other personal information can be used to lodge tax returns and other tax forms, to receive refunds in your name. If your TFN is known to, or being used by someone who shouldn’t have it, this is referred to as a compromised TFN.

Can I get a new TFN?

If you’ve lost your tax file number (TFN) there are a few options for you to try to get it back. If not however, you can call the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on 13 28 61 from 8am to 8pm Australian eastern standard time (AEST) Monday to Friday to find out what you can do to get your TFN.

What should I do if I lost my tax file number?

You might want to rifle through your paperwork and check the following, as your TFN should be on them: an account statement from your superannuation fund. Another option is to fill in a form provided by the ATO to apply for, or inquire about, a TFN.

They may also apply security measures that will monitor any unusual or suspicious activity on your account. You can find your tax file number (TFN) online if you have a myGov account linked to the ATO. You should tell us as soon as possible if your TFN is stolen or misused.

If you already have a TFN and don’t remember the number, you can find it online in ATO online services via your myGov account. If you don’t have a myGov account, you can usually find your TFN on: your superannuation account statement. If you use a registered tax agent, you can ask them for your TFN.

Why do I need a tax file number?

Your TFN is an essential piece of information needed for several reasons — it’s not just a reference number you need to drag out at tax time. Opening bank accounts, applying for government benefits and keeping track of your super savings will all require a TFN.
