Reconsideration is the second step in the Social Security Disability application process and is the first step in the appeal process. If your initial application is denied, you must file for reconsideration within 60 days of receiving the notice of decision from the Social Security office.

How long reconsideration takes?

The reconsideration is the second phase in the disability determination process and generally takes between one and three months. If you are denied after submitting your initial disability application and file an appeal within 60-days of receiving your denial letter, the next phase is called the reconsideration phase.

Can Social Security deny a reconsideration?

If you are denied at the reconsideration, you can ask the SSA for a hearing with an administrative law judge (ALJ).
