Box 1 “Wages, tips, other compensation”: This is federal, taxable income for payments in the calendar year. The amount is calculated as YTD earnings minus pre- tax retirement and pre-tax benefit deductions plus taxable benefits (i.e., certain educational benefits).
What does receiving a W-2 mean?
A W-2 is a tax form where businesses report annual compensation paid to their employees and the payroll taxes withheld from that compensation. Employees who receive a W-2 are paid through their employer’s payroll and have their payroll taxes withheld throughout the year.
Why is Box 1 empty on my W-2?
It sounds like your employer made a mistake. Box 1 should include your wages plus your tips minus any pre-tax payroll deductions like health insurance. If you have no pre-tax deductions, box 1 will equal box 3 and 5.
Do you need the original W-2 to file taxes?
You don’t need to send your Forms W-2 to the IRS and should keep them in a safe place with a copy of your tax return. Use Form 8453, U.S. Individual Income Tax Transmittal for an IRS e-File Return to submit any paper documents that need to be sent after your return has been accepted electronically.
Is W-2 Box 1 before taxes?
Box 1 shows your total taxable wages, tips, prizes and other compensation, as well as any taxable fringe benefits. It does not include elective deferrals to retirement plans, pretax benefits or payroll deductions. Box 2 reports the total amount of federal income taxes withheld from your pay during the year.
What to do if you get a second W2?
The first thing I would check is whether the second W2 you received is a “Corrected” W2. If it is a “Corrected” W2, you will have to file an amended return.
Is the W2 on the second page correct?
Both W2s are correct; neither is a correction. The employer switched processing systems mid year and generated two W2s with different income on each. The correct W2 would be the sum of the two different W2s. It’s been suggested that I simply add the two W2s and enter the result manually.
Can you get more than one W-2 form?
Otherwise, if each W-2 has different Box 1 amounts which more or less add up to your yearly earnings at that job, enter each W-2 separately. You might get more than one W-2 if your employer switched to a different payroll provider or was taken over by another company, or if you worked at different jobs through the same agency.
