If you do discover someone has filed a fraudulent tax return in your name, here are eight steps to take:

  1. Complete a paper return.
  2. File Form 14039.
  3. File a police report.
  4. File a report with the Federal Trade Commission.
  5. Request a copy of the fraudulent return.
  6. Check your credit reports and account statements.

Is filing taxes incorrectly a crime?
