In a nutshell, you can usually claim your college student as a dependent if they’re a full-time student at a qualifying school and they meet the IRS guidelines below. Note that only one person (or spouses filing jointly) may claim a student as a qualifying child.
What qualifies a dependent as a full-time student?
A dependent is defined under Sec. 152(a) as either a qualifying child or a qualifying relative. To be considered a full-time student, the child must be enrolled for the number of hours or courses the school considers to be full time and must be a student for at least five months during the year.
Can a full-time graduate student be claimed as a dependent?
