Workplace competency requires the ability to apply relevant skills, knowledge and attitudes consistently over time and in the required workplace situations and environments. Competency standards in training packages are determined by industry to meet identified industry skill needs.
What is the competency standard?
DEFINITION: The requirements for effective workplace performance in a discrete area of work, work function, activity or process and are used as the basis for defining learning outcomes and the benchmarks for assessment within the VET sector.
What are competencies used for?
Competencies do not establish baseline performance levels; rather they are used to raise the bar on employee performance. They provide employees with road maps to increase their capabilities incrementally. Competencies focus on an organization’s culture and values.

Competency is the capability to apply or use the set of related knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform ‘critical work functions’ or tasks in a defined work setting.

The concept of competency covers the five dimensions of:
- Task skills — carrying out individual tasks.

- Job/role environment skills — fitting in with the workplace environment.
Can a lawyer determine competency?
It is the attorney’s responsibility to determine legal competency of the person who will be signing documents. While that can be accomplished in many ways, it is the attorney’s duty to make a legal determination (not judicial, although this is sometimes necessary) of competence.
How is competency determined?
A determination of competency is a judicial finding made by the court. A physician can opine about a patient’s capacity, but cannot determine competency. Adults are presumed to have capacity unless determined otherwise by the court.
How do you deem a patient incompetent?
You start the process of declaring a person mentally incompetent by filing an official petition with the local district of your state’s probate court. At the same time that you are filing to have someone declared mentally incompetent, you are also filing to become their legal guardian.
