Yes, it can. If you live in your own place and pay your own food and shelter costs, regardless of whether you own or rent, you may get up to the maximum Supplemental Security Income (SSI) amount payable in your State.

Can I claim my parents who receive SSI as dependents?

Qualifying as a Dependent You can claim a parent as a dependent if you provided at least half of his support during the year. The parent’s income may not exceed $4,150 as of 2018; this amount does not include any Social Security or Supplemental Security Income benefits he is receiving.

Do you have to be an adult to be a parent on SSI?
