An independent contractor can receive a bonus from a company. Independent contractor agreement must include a bonus clause with criteria and calculation. The bonus system must be clearly distinguished between contractors and (full-time) employees.
How are bonuses taxed independent contractor?
Bonuses paid to employees are considered wages and are added to their W2. If you give a bonus to an independent contractor it is included on their 1099-Misc form. While there are special rules for bonus withholding, the income tax is the same as regular wages.
Can a contractor claim payment for additional work?
Otherwise in order to claim payment for additional work the Contractor might be required to prove in court that halting the performance of additional work could likely result in destruction, damage or other serious negative consequences for the Customer (which in practice is quite rare).

Why do contractors need to make progress payments?
It allows them to get paid on a regular schedule as they complete their work. Progress payments help control cash flow and can allow contractors to pay employees and suppliers on time. While putting payment applications together can be time consuming at first, establishing a regular process makes the work easier.
Do you have to pay for additional work?
At the same time the mere fact that additional work has been performed by the contractor does not in itself constitute a circumstance giving rise to an obligation on the part of the customer to pay for the work.
