Can you be self-employed without registering?

Self employed people have to register with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to pay tax. This won’t register you are self employed for benefits purposes. There is no one way to register as self employed for benefits.

Do you need an LLC to be self-employed?

You don’t have to have a formal company, such as a partnership, S corporation or limited liability company, to be self-employed. The simplest business structure is a sole proprietorship, and those don’t have much structure at all.

If you currently have a full-time or a part-time job, you will still be able to register yourself as self-employed if you do self-employed work or own a business. It is still a legal requirement to register as self-employed.

Do you have to be self employed to have auto enrolment?

You can find a list of the instances when your employer does not have to automatically enrol you, on GOV.UK. If you are genuinely self-employed in business on your own account then auto-enrolment does not apply to you. However, you may still want to set up a pension scheme.
