The IRS could choose to audit your federal tax return, or your state may choose to audit your state return — or both. Here’s the latest data about where federal and state tax audits are most common.

What address does IRS audit come from?

If your address with the IRS is current, then most mail generally will come either from the IRS service center (what they now call campuses) that processes returns from your state or from the local IRS field office that covers your city/county.

There are two separate types of tax audits you might have to worry about. The IRS could choose to audit your federal tax return, or your state may choose to audit your state return — or both. Here’s the latest data about where federal and state tax audits are most common.

What happens if you are audited by the IRS?

Extending the statute gives you more time to provide further documentation to support your position; request an appeal if you do not agree with the audit results; or to claim a tax refund or credit. It also gives the IRS time to complete the audit and provides time to process the audit results.

What’s the percentage of tax returns that are audited?

With fewer agents available to perform audits, the agency’s audit rate has been whittled to 0.45% of individual returns in fiscal 2019, the IRS said recently. That compares with an audit rate of 0.9% in the fiscal 2014.

What does no change mean in IRS audit?

No change: an audit in which you have substantiated all of the items being reviewed and results in no changes. Agreed: an audit where the IRS proposed changes and you understand and agree with the changes.

Can you request a face to face audit from the IRS?

If you have too many books or records to mail, you can request a face-to-face audit. The IRS will provide contact information and instructions in the letter you receive. Depending on the issues in your audit, IRS examiners may use one of these Audit Techniques Guides to assist them.
