Can I receive cash gift from parents?

Here, the rules are bit simpler – HMRC doesn’t count cash gifts as income, so you won’t have to pay any income tax on cash gifts received from parents (or grandparents for that matter). However, if you make any income from that gift, even if it’s interest earned in a savings account, you may be liable to pay tax on it.

You can give gifts or money up to £3,000 to one person or split the £3,000 between several people. You can carry any unused annual exemption forward to the next tax year – but only for one tax year. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April the following year.

Is money gifted to parents taxable?

Gifting cash or any sum to your child is exempt from tax. If the child is not earning enough income or is still studying, any income earned on the investments or assets purchased in his name will be taxable in your child’s hands. Hence, if the income earned is below the basic exemption limit, there will be no tax.
