What happens when you surrender your green card?
1. Relinquishment of lawful permanent resident status is irrevocable. You can’t change your mind once you have formally relinquished your LPR status. After you give up the Green Card and permanent residence status, you must apply for an appropriate visa or use Visa Waiver to enter the U.S. again.
What is considered abandonment of green card?
The abandonment of a green card may arise when someone attempts to enter the U.S. after residing outside of the country for more than six months since becoming a permanent resident. Extended overseas travel or a long vacation can be considered “abandonment” of your green card and result in removal proceedings.

If you are already a lawful permanent resident waiting for your green card delivery, you should still be able to travel outside the United States without your green card. If you do travel outside the U.S. as a permanent resident without a green card, make sure you return to the U.S. before your stamp expires.
Do I lose my Social Security if I give up my green card?
Relinquishing your green card does not change your eligibility for U.S. Social Security retirement benefits. Once you have given up your green card, you will be treated as a non-U.S. citizen or “alien” and classified as a resident or non-resident alien (NRA).

Can a green card holder surrender their green card?
Yes, you can surrender your green card, and yes, you can apply for a multiple-entry tourist visa. You would file Form I-407, Record of Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status, and then you would apply for your visa using the online DS-160.
